About Eleanor

Eleanor Cunningham is a Scottish abstract
landscape artist based in Dunbar, East Lothian. Her work explores the
relationship between landscape, memory and belonging through layered paintings
on paper and canvas.

The landscape we see. The landscape we carry.

The landscape we see. The landscape we carry.

My work begins outside. I walk, look, photograph,
sketch and collect fragments: a line of trees disappearing into mist, channels
cut through silt, weathered bark, stone, debris, or a sudden change in light.

I am interested not only in what a place
looks like, but in what it feels like to be there. Weather can be visceral.
Walking creates rhythm. Repeated visits build familiarity while revealing
constant change. Sketchbook marks, photographs, words and remembered physical
sensations become an evolving map that I carry back to the studio.

There, I work intuitively with translucent
papers, ink, acrylic, collage and natural pigments. I build, obscure and reveal
layers. Repeated marks create rhythm and structure, while fluid materials
introduce chance. Water and pigment are allowed to move and settle, making
traces that cannot be completely controlled or repeated.

This balance between intention and
uncertainty feels close to the landscape itself: shaped by tides, weather,
erosion, growth and human intervention.

My recent practice has become increasingly
rooted in John Muir Country Park. Sustained attention to this one landscape has
allowed me to notice it more deeply and has connected me back to the estuary
landscapes I knew growing up. The work has become a way of linking the place I
see before me with the world I feel inside.

Rather than representing particular views,
I think of the paintings as accumulated landscapes. They hold traces of
observation, material, memory and time — asking how places become part of us,
and how making can give form to that connection.

Biography

Eleanor studied textiles at the Scottish
College of Textiles, now part of Heriot-Watt University, graduating with
Honours in 1999. Her early training continues to inform her sensitivity to
surface, layering, translucency and material.

After an earlier career in business and
social enterprise, she returned to sustained creative practice and completed a
Master’s in Fine Art at Falmouth University in 2025. Her postgraduate research
explored landscape, memory, belonging, embodied perception and material-led
making.

Biography Cont...

Eleanor now works from her studio in Dunbar. Her practice combines painting, paper, collage, locally connected pigments and found materials, with walking and observation forming an important
part of her research.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries
and selected exhibitions across Scotland and the UK. She is represented by
Silson Contemporary and regularly exhibits with Dukes of West Barns.
